Cardinal Red – My latest painting continues a new experiment of painting with acrylics on both upholstery fabric and epoxy clay.
Learning from some trouble I ran into with the clay and the stretched fabric in my first attempt with this, I now mounted the upholstery fabric to canvas panel. This gave me a much harder surface to really push the clay into. In this case, the cardinal and branch are painted on the clay, while the background is all painted on the upholstery fabric. The pattern on the fabric has a real frenetic energy to it that really captures the energy of the background trees. It was tough to find a nice balance to the “noise” in the background and that not drowning out the cardinal, but I feel as though a good balance was struck. The cardinal on the clay really pops.
The painting is 14in x 11in and is framed in my handcrafted gold wooden frame that measures 17in x 14in. It’s available for sale on my Etsy shop
