I am thrilled to present “Ella Lee in To Catch a Hummingbird“
The very first thing that I can remember creating and being extremely proud of was a book. I was probably 5 years old and the book was about my dog Oreo and I can still remember the cover. Oreo, illustrated in all black towards the bottom of the cover, and then an entire red background scribbled out in red crayon. The book was about 10 pieces of 5.5×8.5 paper bound with 3 haphazard staples going down the left edge. The book detailed the adventures of Oreo and I was just so proud to tell anyone who would listen about the events that unfolded on each page.
35 years later, and I have just written, illustrated, designed and self-published my first children’s book and I am happy to say that I feel like that 5 year old once again! The book is inspired by our kids and I can truly say that this book would not exist without them. Ella, in particular, and her love of animals, proved to be a ground swell of inspiration.
This book is also the culmination of these last 5+ years of me drawing and painting. In October of 2015, after a trip to Salem, I would start drawing again regularly, beginning with “The Witch”. The pen and ink would lead to water color, which would lead to acrylics on canvas panel and ultimately the acrylics on upholstery fabric. This book collects many of these upholstery fabric illustrations and weaves them into a whimsical and humorous tale.
So, it is with a heart full of pride that I present “Ella Lee in To Catch a Hummingbird”. The book is for sale as both an ebook and a limited run first edition paperback on Amazon. Please spread the word: share the book’s webpage, the Amazon link, tell you friends and help me to get the word out.
To that end, I have enlisted some help! I leave you with Ella Lee reading the first page of “Ella Lee” (feel free to share this, too!):
About the Book:
Ella Lee is the sweetest little girl and she loves animals. She loves to hold them, pet them, touch them…and sometimes squeeze them. So, when she sees a hummingbird, she really wants to touch it, but she must catch it first. And so begins her adventure where Ella encounters many wonderful animals on land and in the sea. She is curious and speaks plainly, making creative observations about all the animals she meets with a humor that will be enjoyed by both adults and children alike!
So, come along with Ella Lee on an adventure to catch a hummingbird!
Ella Lee in To Catch a Hummingbird is Michael Pekala’s first children’s book. He wrote, illustrated and designed the book. It is 28 pages long and can be enjoyed as a book that parents read to their kids, or by school aged children looking for a fun and humorous adventure featuring a variety of beautifully illustrated animals. All of the illustrations in this book are acrylic paint on stretched upholstery fabric.
The book is available for sale as both an ebook and a limited run first edition paperback on Amazon.com.
